Which container grades make a water promise?

Lessors commonly inspect used equipment against Institute of International Container Lessors criteria, but a buyer still needs the seller's written condition description and an inspection of the actual unit.
One-trip describes shipping history: the box generally made a single cargo crossing from the factory before entering domestic service. It usually offers the best starting point for roof steel, door alignment and gaskets because it has had little service exposure, but handling marks do not turn it into a used fleet box.
Cargo-worthy means an inspector considers the container suitable for international cargo movement at the time of inspection. That designation concerns structural and weather condition for transport, while WWT is a narrower used-box grade indicating that the enclosure closes and keeps ordinary wind and water out.
An as-is box carries no useful water assurance beyond whatever the seller writes into the transaction. Low purchase cost can conceal a roof patch, compressed gasket or racked opening that becomes obvious only during the first hard rain. Where should you look for a leak?
Start high. Rust-through often begins where roof damage, standing debris or a failed repair exposes steel, while a dent can create a low spot that holds water long after the rest of the roof dries. Inspect from a safe vantage point rather than walking on the roof.
Move next to the door header and upper corners. Meltwater can cross a damaged header seal, and a container frame that is slightly out of square can leave one upper door corner loose even when all four lock handles appear down. Watch the gasket while another person closes the door; it should compress continuously rather than fold inward.
At the threshold, clear gravel, fasteners, frozen mud and scraps before blaming the gasket. Debris can stop the door leaf short of its final position or cut the lower seal. Water staining that starts at the sill may also come from runoff trapped against a low pad, not from the roof.
Interior clues help separate an old mark from active entry. Can a crew test watertightness in 10 minutes?
Yes, provided the test is controlled and no one climbs onto the box. Pick a dry period, empty enough wall space to see the steel, close both doors completely and let your eyes adjust inside before beginning the two-part check.

Water can appear inside a completely watertight shell. Warm humid air carries vapor to cold steel, where the vapor condenses into droplets; enough droplets gather and fall from the ceiling as “container rain.” A broad field of beads after a cold night points to this process more strongly than a single trail below a hole.
Colorado's spring and fall swings make the cycle easy to trigger. Afternoon air and material warm inside a closed box, steel cools quickly after sunset, and the interior surface can fall below the dew point while moisture remains trapped. A load of damp lumber, wet masonry tools or snow-covered equipment adds far more moisture than ordinary dry storage.
Ventilation lowers interior humidity when outside conditions allow it, while spacing stock away from walls lets air reach cold corners. Desiccant can help with a finite moisture load, but it is not a substitute for removing wet material or correcting repeated water entry. Inspect and replace it on a schedule suited to the amount of moisture entering the box.

What do snow and ice do to a container roof?
A cargo container roof is not a pitched building roof. Snow can remain on the shallow crown, collect windblown debris and pass through repeated melt-freeze cycles. At a mountain site such as Steamboat Springs, the plan needs safe snow access without assuming the roof will clear itself.
Standing snow is not proof of a leak, but it extends the time that meltwater touches seams, dents and old repairs. Water can also move toward the door header, freeze at a gasket and return inside when sun warms the steel. Keep stock below the header protected until the crew confirms where a wet mark begins.

Begin with dry cargo. Brush snow from cases, let washed equipment drain and avoid loading uncovered damp lumber immediately before the doors remain closed for a weekend. Moisture brought inside has nowhere useful to go when cold steel seals the enclosure.
Raise cartons, paper records and finish material on pallets or freestanding racks, then preserve an air path around the walls and along the center aisle. The lift protects against a small sill event and makes dampness visible before it wicks through an entire stack.
Use sealed bins for documents, fasteners and electrical parts that cannot tolerate condensation. Place humidity indicators or a meter at more than one height, because warm damp air and cold lower corners can produce different readings. Check desiccant and stored goods after storms and large temperature changes rather than only at monthly inventory.
Keep door gaskets clean and make sure all locking bars seat before leaving. Shelving must stand on the floor because drilling or welding into the shell is prohibited. Hazardous and flammable material cannot be stored in the unit under Rental Agreement §7.2.
What should be ready before you reserve?
